The original Seestar S50 changed what beginners could expect from a small telescope. Instead of assembling a mount, camera, computer, guide system, and collection of cables, you could set one instrument on a tripod, choose a target in the app, and watch a deep-sky image build on your phone. It made astrophotography approachable without making the night sky feel ordinary.

The Seestar S50 Pro keeps that wonderfully simple experience, but gives the imaging system much more to work with. Its aperture remains 50 mm, so this is not a larger version of the S50. The important changes are in the optics, cameras, drive system, software access, power, and the range of pictures it can create.

A new four-element optical system feeds a larger 4K telephoto camera with a 2.8° field of view. A second 4K wide-angle camera opens a 63° view for the Milky Way, constellations, star trails, and nightscapes. The Pro also adds a precision near-zero-backlash drive, open ASCOM Alpaca support, a 10,000 mAh battery, 128 GB of storage, and a broader set of automated imaging tools. It is still a Seestar—set it down, connect the app, and choose what you want to photograph—but it is no longer limited to one camera and one way of seeing the sky.

The Whole Imaging System in One Hand

The S50 Pro combines the telescope, cameras, motorized mount, electronic focusing, filter system, dew control, image processing, and smart controller in one instrument weighing 2.8 kg (6.2 lb.). The folded body measures just 140 × 149 × 268 mm (5.5 × 5.9 × 10.6 in.).

In standard alt-azimuth mode, level the tripod, connect through the Seestar app, and select a target. The S50 Pro locates and centers the object, tracks it, captures a sequence of exposures, and stacks them as you watch. A beginner can photograph the Orion Nebula on the first clear night; an experienced observer can enjoy a productive session without assembling a conventional imaging rig.

Two Cameras, Two Views of the Sky

The telephoto side uses a 50 mm, 260 mm focal-length, f/5.2 four-element apochromatic optical system that includes ED glass. Its 1/1.2-inch sensor records 8.3-megapixel images at 2160 × 3840 resolution and covers a 2.8° field. This is the camera for nebulae, star clusters, the Moon, the Sun with the supplied solar filter, and brighter galaxies. Compared with the original S50, the larger sensor provides substantially more framing room at essentially the same image scale.

The second camera is a genuine wide-angle imaging system rather than a simple finder. Its 6 mm f/1.75 lens and 8.3-megapixel sensor cover 63° of sky, making it the natural choice for the Milky Way, constellations, meteor showers, star trails, and landscapes beneath the stars. It can recognize constellation patterns, autofocus, and process the foreground separately from the tracking sky so the land remains sharp while the stars are aligned.

The cameras are complementary. The telephoto camera is where an object such as the Andromeda Galaxy belongs; its approximately 3° span nearly fills the 2.8° field and can be completed with a small mosaic. The wide-angle camera is for the larger scene around an object—the sweep of the Milky Way above a landscape, not close detail within an individual galaxy.

Imaging from the Backyard

The telephoto camera includes a dual-band filter that passes important hydrogen-alpha and doubly ionized oxygen emission while reducing much of the surrounding urban sky glow and moonlight. On emission nebulae such as the Lagoon, Swan, Rosette, and North America Nebulae, it can make productive imaging possible from a suburban yard.

The filter does not make light pollution disappear, and it is not intended for every target. Galaxies, reflection nebulae, star clusters, and broadband nightscapes emit light across a wider spectrum and benefit more directly from dark, transparent skies. The internal dark-frame filter serves a different purpose: it blocks incoming light while the system records calibration data used to identify and subtract camera noise.

Simple at First, More Capable Later

Most owners will begin in the standard alt-azimuth mode because it offers the quickest setup. Equatorial Mode requires more careful positioning and polar alignment, but reduces the field rotation that limits longer alt-azimuth captures. The Pro’s near-zero-backlash drive allows smoother corrections and steadier tracking.

ASCOM Alpaca support opens the instrument to compatible third-party software such as N.I.N.A. for more detailed sequencing and automation. It does not turn a 50 mm smart telescope into a large conventional imaging rig, but it gives the owner more freedom to decide how the instrument is controlled.

What to Photograph

The S50 Pro is an imaging telescope; it does not have an eyepiece. Its telephoto camera is well suited to the Orion, Lagoon, Swan, and Rosette Nebulae, the Pleiades, Double Cluster, Andromeda Galaxy, and many open and globular clusters. The Moon fills the frame with substantial detail, while the magnetic solar filter brings sunspots and white-light solar events within reach. Automated mosaics provide additional room for targets that extend beyond a single frame.

The wide-angle camera takes over when the subject is the sky itself: the Milky Way crossing the horizon, a constellation above the trees, star trails turning around the celestial pole, or a night landscape that needs both earth and sky in the composition.

Small, faint galaxies, tight double stars, and high-resolution planetary detail are not what a 50 mm, 260 mm focal-length system is designed to resolve. Choose the S50 Pro for approachable deep-sky imaging and unusually versatile wide-field work, not as a substitute for a large-aperture visual telescope or a long-focal-length planetary instrument.

Observing Tip

For your first session, choose a bright target that suits the active camera. Try the Orion Nebula, Lagoon Nebula, Pleiades, or Moon with the telephoto system, depending on the season. Allow a deep-sky target to stack for at least twenty to thirty minutes before judging the result. From town, use the dual-band filter on an emission nebula and leave it off for galaxies and star clusters. Then switch to the wide-angle camera for a Milky Way field or constellation. Using both cameras in one evening is the quickest way to understand what separates the S50 Pro from the original design.

The precision drive, Equatorial Mode, Plan Mode, remote access, and ASCOM Alpaca support create room for more ambitious sessions. None of that changes the basic appeal: choose a target, let the instrument do the mechanical work, and watch the sky become a photograph. There is still something wonderfully satisfying about carrying the whole setup outside in one hand and watching a faint patch of sky gather color and structure on the screen.
