Sky-Watcher SynScan GPS Module – Let Your Telescope Know Where It Is
If you’ve ever spent precious observing time manually entering date, time, and location into your SynScan hand controller, the Sky-Watcher SynScan GPS Module is here to take that task off your hands. This compact, plug-and-play accessory brings satellite-based precision to your telescope’s alignment process—saving time, improving accuracy, and making your nights under the stars that much easier.
What It Does
The SynScan GPS Module is designed specifically for Sky-Watcher mounts that use the SynScan GoTo system, including the EQ6-R Pro, HEQ5 Pro, AZ-EQ5, and EQM-35, among others. Once connected, the module communicates with up to 12 GPS satellites to automatically input your exact location (latitude and longitude), along with the current date and Universal Time. This data is then used by your mount’s GoTo system to drastically reduce setup time and increase pointing accuracy.
No more fumbling with menu screens or double-checking time zones. Just plug it in, power up, and let the GPS do the rest.
Fast, Accurate, Reliable
The module typically acquires a GPS fix within 30 to 60 seconds under open skies. It draws minimal power directly from the hand controller port, so there's no need for a separate power supply or batteries. It’s also intelligent enough to remember its last location, speeding up cold starts on subsequent sessions.
Once the GPS fix is acquired, the module automatically uploads the correct location and time data to your SynScan controller. From there, you simply proceed with your normal alignment routine—only now, the system knows exactly where it is on Earth and what time it is, down to the second.
Compact and Mount-Friendly
Physically, the module is small enough to mount unobtrusively to your tripod leg or accessory tray using the included Velcro backing. The attached coiled cable provides enough length to comfortably reach your hand controller port without clutter. It’s out of the way when you don’t need it—but always ready to deliver pinpoint GPS data when you do.
Compatibility
This module is compatible with all current SynScan hand controllers and mounts that use the standard SynScan firmware. It connects via the hand controller port, not the mount’s auxiliary port, so setup is straightforward. If your mount runs SynScan and has a hand controller jack, you’re good to go.
Who Needs It?
The SynScan GPS Module is ideal for observers who travel frequently to dark sky sites, where location data varies from night to night. It’s also a time-saving upgrade for backyard astronomers who simply want faster setup and fewer data entry errors. Astrophotographers, in particular, will appreciate the added accuracy that comes from having precise GPS-derived coordinates and time data in their alignment routine.
If you’re tired of entering your coordinates manually—or if you just want to make your GoTo mount even smarter—this module is a small upgrade with a big impact.
