iOptron HEM44EC EQ SWG hybrid Mount Head
Manufacturer Part # H444
Manufacturer Part # H444
The iOptron HEM44EC is a professional-grade harmonic drive equatorial mount designed for astrophotographers who demand high performance in a lightweight, portable package. Featuring a high-resolution RA axis encoder for real-time error correction, a payload capacity of 44 pounds, and a center-balanced strain wave gear system, the HEM44EC delivers incredible tracking precision with zero backlash—without the need for a heavy counterweight system.
This version does not include the iPolar electronic polar alignment camera, making it ideal for imagers who already own one, or who prefer drift alignment, SharpCap, or NINA-based polar alignment methods. It's ready to go with the software and tools you already use.
At the heart of the HEM44EC is a strain wave gear system (also known as harmonic drive), which eliminates the backlash and periodic error common to worm-driven mounts. This system provides extremely high torque, smooth tracking, and repeatable positioning—even under heavy load.
Unlike traditional equatorial mounts that require counterweights to balance payloads, the HEM44EC uses its center-balanced design to carry up to 44 pounds without counterweights (depending on the payload's moment arm and balance). This dramatically reduces the overall setup weight and makes the HEM44EC an ideal choice for mobile imagers, remote observatories, and airline travel.
The EC version of the HEM44 features a Renishaw-style high-resolution encoder on the right ascension axis, delivering real-time periodic error correction with sub-arcsecond tracking accuracy. That means you can expect longer unguided exposures (with the right setup), or guide with much lower total RMS error than a standard harmonic mount.
For imagers running longer focal lengths or tighter pixel scales, the EC version gives you extra confidence that your stars will stay round—even when guiding is minimal or momentarily interrupted.
Despite its performance, the HEM44EC mount head weighs just 13.65 pounds (6.2 kg)—light enough to carry with one hand, and a fraction of the weight of comparable capacity equatorials. With an optional counterweight shaft, it can support even heavier payloads up to 65 pounds with counterweights attached.
This makes the HEM44EC a rare combination: observatory-grade tracking in a truly portable form.
This model omits the iPolar camera included with some other versions of the HEM44. That’s a plus for imagers who prefer third-party polar alignment methods, or who already have a standalone iPolar or QHY Polemaster system. It also simplifies the design and keeps the mount lighter and cleaner—especially for users mounting the HEM44EC in remote observatories or semi-permanent setups.
The mount comes equipped with the Go2Nova 8409 hand controller, giving you access to over 212,000 celestial objects and full control of all slewing, syncing, and tracking features. For PC or mobile control, the HEM44EC offers USB and Wi-Fi connectivity via the hand controller, and is compatible with all major astronomy software platforms, including ASCOM, INDI, SkySafari, iOptron Commander, and more.
Also onboard is zero position search and locator, so you can always return to home position even after a power interruption.

If you want serious tracking accuracy, a portable footprint, and the confidence of encoder-based real-time correction—without the extra weight of counterweights or unused accessories—the iOptron HEM44EC hits the sweet spot. Whether you're imaging from your backyard, a dark sky site, or a remote observatory, it’s a mount that lets your optics do the talking while it quietly keeps everything on track.
Observing Tip:
Even with a high-resolution RA encoder, guiding can still improve results—especially if you're imaging with long focal lengths or under windy conditions. Use a light-weight OAG or mini guide scope to fine-tune performance and take full advantage of the EC’s encoder precision.
