iOptron HEM44 Hybrid Strain Wave Mount Head with Case – 44 lb Payload, No Counterweight Required

iOptron Part Number: H442

High performance, compact form, and counterweight-free operation—iOptron’s HEM44 redefines what’s possible in a mid-capacity mount. With a mount head weighing just 13.65 pounds, the HEM44 supports up to 44 pounds of payload without needing a counterweight or shaft. It’s a lightweight powerhouse for astrophotographers and observers who want professional-level results without the hassle or bulk of traditional equatorial systems.

Whether you're imaging under dark skies or observing from your backyard, the HEM44 offers a cleaner, faster, and more efficient way to get tracking.

Hybrid Drive Design – Strength Meets Smoothness

At the heart of the HEM44 is a hybrid mechanical design that blends the best characteristics of two drive systems:

  • The RA axis uses a strain wave gear (harmonic drive)—a compact, backlash-free transmission known for delivering exceptionally smooth tracking and high torque in a low-profile form factor.

  • The DEC axis employs a belt-driven worm gear, offering consistent movement and minimal backlash with low maintenance needs.

This dual-drive approach gives the mount the mechanical precision of higher-end observatory mounts, with a far smaller footprint and weight. Its 270-second gear period ensures the HEM44 can handle long-exposure imaging with confidence—especially when paired with an autoguider.

No Counterweight? No Problem.

Thanks to its strain wave drive system and carefully engineered weight distribution, the HEM44 maintains stability and performance with no counterweight or shaft required. That means fewer parts to carry, less to set up, and more freedom when traveling or operating from tight spaces.

You can load it with:

  • 4–6" refractors

  • 8" SCTs or EdgeHD OTAs

  • Dual imaging rigs

  • Visual setups with large binoculars or Maksutovs

You’ll still get reliable, accurate tracking—and you won’t miss the counterweights one bit.

Rugged CNC Machined Construction – Built to Travel

The HEM44’s body is built from CNC-machined aluminum, finished with a durable black anodizing that resists wear from field use. The mount is compact and solid, and comes packed in a hard aluminum carry case, ready for travel to your favorite dark-sky site or star party.

Its streamlined frame also supports internal cable routing, meaning no dangling cords to catch, snag, or drag during slews. A clean mount is a reliable mount—and the HEM44 was designed with that in mind.

Smart Electronics for Smarter Sessions

The HEM44 is more than just a strong frame. It includes several advanced features that protect your gear and preserve your alignment:

  • Electronic Friction Brake: Halts the mount gently and safely during a power failure, protecting your payload.

  • Power-Down Memory: Recalls mount position after a loss of power and resumes tracking without requiring a realignment.

  • Zero-Position Locator: Ensures a consistent and accurate startup and park routine.

  • PPEC (Permanent Periodic Error Correction): Once trained, the mount remembers its own periodic error pattern and corrects for it in future sessions—no need to retrain every time you power on.

GoTo Control Made Simple

The included Go2Nova® 8409 hand controller offers:

  • A database of over 212,000 celestial objects, including deep-sky catalogs, stars, solar system objects, and custom entries

  • A cold-friendly OLED screen and backlit keys for clear visibility in all lighting conditions

  • Built-in Wi-Fi, allowing connection to mobile apps like SkySafari or iOptron Commander Lite

  • A USB port for firmware upgrades and computer control via ASCOM or INDI drivers

Whether you’re using the hand controller, your laptop, or your smartphone, the HEM44 fits into your existing workflow with minimal friction.

What’s Included

  • iOptron HEM44 Hybrid Harmonic Drive Mount Head (no iPolar)

  • Go2Nova® 8409 hand controller

  • Dual saddle (Vixen and Losmandy D compatible)

  • USB and DC power cables

  • Anodized aluminum hard case for transport and storage

  • Documentation and two-year manufacturer warranty

Tripod not included. The iOptron 8061A carbon fiber tripod is highly recommended for its lightweight, stable performance.

Observing Tip

While the HEM44 supports a wide range of optical tubes, the key to maximizing performance is keeping your payload compact and well-centered. Even without counterweights, you’ll be surprised how easily this mount carries a 5" refractor or 8" SCT. To further streamline setup, consider software polar alignment through plate solving if you’re not using iPolar—it's a fast and precise method for EQ configuration.

Why Choose the HEM44 (No iPolar)?

If you already use plate solving or alternative polar alignment tools—or simply prefer a cleaner RA axis—the HEM44 (H442) gives you all the performance of the iPolar-equipped version without the additional hardware. With the same hybrid drive design, high payload capacity, and modern power management, this model is ideal for experienced users building a minimal, high-performance rig.

From deep-sky imagers to visual observers with heavy optics, the HEM44 offers elegant engineering in a counterweight-free package that travels as well as it performs.
