iOptron HEM27 Hybrid Harmonic Drive Mount Head with Case – Compact Power for Imaging on the Go

iOptron Part Number: H272

If you’ve been looking for a portable equatorial mount that delivers professional-level performance—without the burden of counterweights or excess weight—the iOptron HEM27 might be your perfect match. Weighing only 8.15 lbs, this hybrid strain wave drive mount carries nearly 30 lbs of gear with ease, all in a sleek CNC-machined frame that travels as well as it performs.

Whether you’re building a minimal wide-field imaging rig or upgrading to a mount with better tracking and integration options, the HEM27 is engineered for reliability, accuracy, and simplicity.

Hybrid Harmonic Drive Design – Compact and Backlash-Free

The HEM27 uses a strain wave gear (harmonic drive) on the RA axis, a cutting-edge technology that provides:

  • Zero backlash for smooth, uninterrupted tracking

  • High torque in a compact form factor

  • Precise slewing and stability even at high loads

The DEC axis is equipped with a belt-driven worm gear, offering near-silent operation with minimal maintenance and excellent responsiveness. Together, the dual-drive hybrid system ensures accurate performance with less mechanical complexity and less to go wrong in the field.

The RA axis features a 360-second gear period, long enough to support extended exposures when used with a guiding system.

Portable Strength – Built for Travel and Field Use

Despite its modest 3.7 kg (8.15 lbs) weight, the HEM27 supports up to 29.7 lbs (13.5 kg) of optical and imaging equipment. That’s enough for a loaded 4" or 5" refractor, an 8" SCT, or a dual-rig setup with a guide scope and accessories—all without a counterweight or shaft.

The mount head is machined from cast and CNC-finished aluminum, anodized in black for durability and visual appeal. It’s built to handle travel, temperature changes, and the rigors of nightly use with ease.

A soft padded carrying case is included, making this a ready-to-go solution for imaging at home or in the field.

Reliable GoTo Control with Advanced Safeguards

The HEM27 is equipped with the Go2Nova® 8409 hand controller, offering:

  • A 212,000+ object database covering stars, deep sky objects, planets, comets, and more

  • A cold-tolerant OLED screen with a backlit keypad

  • Wi-Fi capability, enabling control via SkySafari or iOptron Commander Lite

  • A USB port for firmware upgrades and computer control via ASCOM (Windows) or INDI (MacOS/Linux)

Also built into the mount:

  • ST-4 autoguider port

  • Power-down memory: resumes tracking and alignment after a loss of power

  • Electronic friction brake: protects your gear by halting movement safely during sudden power failures

  • Zero-position locator: makes startup and park routines more consistent

  • Internal cable routing: keeps your setup clean and reduces the risk of cable snags during slews

What’s Included

  • HEM27 hybrid strain wave mount head

  • Go2Nova® 8409 hand controller

  • Dual saddle (Vixen and Losmandy D-compatible)

  • USB and DC power cables

  • Soft carrying case

  • Two-year manufacturer warranty

Note: This model does not include the iPolar electronic polar alignment system. Polar alignment must be done using alternative software or hardware solutions. Compatible tripods (sold separately) include the iOptron 8061A carbon fiber tripod.

Observing Tip

If you're using a plate solving polar alignment tool like the one built into N.I.N.A. or ASIAIR, you may not need iPolar at all. This version of the HEM27 gives you the same hybrid drive performance and guiding capabilities—minus the built-in polar scope—for those who already align via software or prefer a clean RA axis.

Why Choose the HEM27 (No iPolar)?

The HEM27 is ideal for users who want maximum portability and proven tracking performance without unnecessary extras. By skipping the built-in iPolar, this version saves you money and weight—while still giving you the same drive performance, guiding ports, Wi-Fi control, and robust design as the iPolar-equipped version.

If you're looking for a counterweight-free solution for mobile imaging, this is one of the most capable lightweight mounts available today.
