A Center-Balanced Classic with Modern Intelligence and Field-Ready Portability
The iOptron CEM40 (#C402AN3) is a mount that speaks softly but carries a payload. It is the product of thoughtful engineering, crafted not just to function, but to empower. In this configuration, the mount arrives as a complete system: the mount head, integrated iPolar polar alignment camera, LiteRoc 1.75" stainless steel tripod, NUC-ready dovetail saddle with USB and 12V ports, and a hard-shell carrying case. It is a portable platform built to perform with quiet confidence under dark skies or in permanent observatories.
The CEM40's center-balanced design is more than a clever acronym—it is the physical expression of balance in form and function. At just 15.8 pounds, the mount head supports up to 40 pounds of payload, with whisper-quiet slewing, precise tracking, and elegant cable management. This version does not include the high-resolution encoder found in the EC model, but it remains a highly capable and reliable system for both visual observers and guided imagers alike.
At its core, the CEM40 is about efficiency. The center-balanced equatorial architecture positions the telescope’s weight directly over the tripod, reducing stress on the drive system and creating natural stability without the need for excessive counterweighting. This thoughtful design means better balance, less strain on motors, and a smoother, more forgiving tracking profile—especially valuable in field setups where quick polar alignment and setup are essential.
Whether you're tracking the slow motion of a galaxy cluster or jumping from target to target across the sky, the CEM40 keeps up—and keeps quiet.
Included with this package is iOptron’s integrated iPolar electronic polar scope—a factory-aligned camera that replaces traditional polar alignment scopes with software-guided simplicity. iPolar allows for sub-arcminute polar alignment, even when Polaris isn’t visible, by using plate solving and pattern recognition. No more craning your neck, deciphering star charts, or guessing in the dark. Just plug in, launch the software, and align.
This version of the CEM40 comes equipped with a NUC-ready saddle—a rigid top-mounted bracket designed to accommodate an Intel NUC mini PC or similar small-form computer. Combined with the USB and 12V power ports on the saddle, you can create a fully integrated imaging system with zero cable drag. Your camera, focuser, filter wheel, and guider can all route cleanly through the mount, allowing for better balance and neater setups.
Whether you run your rig with NINA, Ekos, SGP, or a custom-built imaging script, the CEM40 lets you mount your brain where your optics are.
Supporting the CEM40 is the LiteRoc 1.75" stainless steel tripod, which blends strength with convenience. Its wide stance and solid stainless legs provide a secure footing for imaging, while its lightweight construction and integrated spreader make setup and teardown quick and painless. For field users, it’s the best of both worlds: observatory stability with grab-and-go portability.
Protecting your gear between sessions is just as important as using it. The CEM40 comes nestled inside a custom-cut, foam-lined hard case, making it easy to transport to dark sky sites or star parties. Precision deserves protection, and this case delivers.

While the EC version of the CEM40 may get the spotlight for its ultra-low tracking error, the standard CEM40 is no slouch—especially when guided. For those using short to medium focal length telescopes, or guiding with PHD2 and a sensitive guide camera, this mount tracks beautifully. Add an iOptron iEAF focuser and you’ve got a quiet, capable rig ready for remote automation or deep-sky visual exploration.
