AstroZap Flexible Dew Shield for Celestron NexStar 8SE – With Notch

The Celestron NexStar 8SE is one of the most beloved and versatile telescopes around—but its exposed corrector plate is just asking for dew, stray light, and even the occasional fingerprint. The AstroZap Flexible Dew Shield is a lightweight, no-fuss solution that protects your optics and improves contrast with a simple wraparound design made specifically for the 8SE.

Constructed from rugged yet flexible black ABS plastic, this dew shield attaches in seconds with a secure Velcro strip. The interior is lined with soft black felt, which acts as a light trap to reduce internal reflections and increase image contrast—especially useful when observing near street lights or under moonlit skies.

This version includes a precision-cut notch to accommodate the NexStar SE’s integrated dovetail mounting rail. That means it wraps flush to the front of your scope without interfering with the mount—no wobble, no modification needed.

Features:

  • Designed specifically for the Celestron 8" NexStar 8SE Schmidt-Cassegrain

  • Flexible black ABS plastic for durability and lightweight performance

  • Velvet-lined interior blocks stray light and helps slow dew formation

  • Single notch clears the built-in dovetail rail for a perfect fit

  • Installs quickly and securely with Velcro fastening

  • Adds contrast while protecting your corrector from dew and dust

Observing Tip:

Even if dew isn't an issue where you observe, a good dew shield can dramatically boost image contrast by blocking ambient light from nearby streetlamps, porch lights, or even the Moon. You’ll especially notice the improvement when observing faint galaxies or low-surface-brightness nebulae.

Works great! Most times don’t

"Works great! Most times don’t need to use the dew heater ring."

Used on a Dob

"I purchased this to help control light intrusion from ground sources for my 8" Dob. It really worked well. It goes flat for storage and snugs up nicely when I install it on the Dob. The velcro has enough adjustment available to allow you to get a good fit."

Simple and easy

"This was one of the first accessories I bought for my 8" SCT because my dark sky site can get dewey. It does the job of keeping the dew off, and I also use it when it's not dewey to keep out any errant light. It makes a difference when observing faint deep sky objects. Can be rolled up or stored flat, and is easy to transport."

"A dew shield is an important addition to the amateur astronomer's equipment. I use a Nexstar 8 SE and purchased the Astrozap to combat problems with dew in winter and to shield my scope from nearby streetlights. This is a great product. With the slot and velcro strip, it fits snugly and holds well. The inner surface is soft black cloth (felt?) which absorbs dew and prevents reflections. Moreover, the flexible, lightweight design makes it very easy to transport."

Review by Kevin Grisez

"If you have an SCT, you will definitely need a dew shield and this is a great choice. It is a very durable, yet nice and flexible plastic. The inside is lined with a soft, black material (maybe felt). There is a thin foam grip at the base that nicely secures the shield to your OTA. When properly affixed to the OTA, this shield will not shift or slip. I took my time and installed it to a perfect fit and now I keep it that shape all the time, and all I do is just shimmy it onto the OTA before every observing session. The velcro is nice and strong, so if you want to take this approach, there is no risk of the velcro losing its grip over time. It works very well, even on really damp nights. If you tend to observe for several hours at a time, you may want to look for one that is heated (or you can add heated straps later on if you decide), but I can only usually get out for 2 to 3 hours at a time, so this is perfect for me. This is a very solid dew shield and it even looks great when strapped to the shimmering orange tube of the 8 SE!"
