The Power of Center-Balance

Like all members of the iOptron CEM (Center-Balanced Equatorial Mount) family, the CEM70EC2 uses a center-balanced design that shifts the weight of your payload directly over the center of the mount head. This not only improves load capacity relative to the mount’s weight but also increases stability—especially when compared to traditional German equatorials. The result? A 70-pound payload capacity on a mount head that weighs just 30 pounds.

If you're traveling to dark skies or setting up in your backyard observatory, the CEM70EC2 offers the rare combination of portability, strength, and performance in a compact footprint.

Dual Encoders = Real-Time Tracking Correction

The "EC2" in the name stands for "Encoder on both axes," and that’s where the CEM70EC2 stands apart from even its high-performing siblings. Unlike mounts that rely on periodic error correction in RA only, the dual encoders on the EC2 continuously monitor and correct both RA and Dec motion in real time. That means sub-arcsecond tracking performance without guiding—or if you're guiding, you're pushing total RMS error down into the minuscule digits.

If you’re imaging with long focal lengths, narrowband filters, or in gusty conditions where guiding corrections on both axes matter, the CEM70EC2 delivers the kind of control most mounts only dream of.

Precision Without the Guesswork

Included with the CEM70EC2 is iOptron's integrated iPolar electronic polar scope, which streamlines the polar alignment process to just a few minutes. Unlike traditional polar scopes that depend on visibility and manual positioning, iPolar uses a digital camera and software interface to guide you through a simple, accurate alignment—even when Polaris isn’t visible. It’s a quality-of-life feature that becomes essential after your first use.

CNC Machined, Observatory-Grade Engineering

Every component on the CEM70EC2 feels purpose-built. The CNC-machined metal construction gives the mount a premium fit and finish, with smooth axis motion and high mechanical rigidity. Large altitude and azimuth adjustment knobs make polar alignment a breeze, even with gloves. And with an internal cable management system that routes power and data through the mount head, there’s no cord wrap, no snags, and fewer things to go wrong.

The mount includes a 48V DC power supply, ensuring maximum torque and efficiency, as well as a hand controller with iOptron’s Go2Nova 8407+ system—offering over 212,000 celestial objects, real-time pointing feedback, and an intuitive interface that doesn’t require a computer to get started.

Built-in Wi-Fi and USB 3.0 Hub

The CEM70EC2 now includes Wi-Fi as standard equipment, letting you control the mount wirelessly with iOptron Commander, ASCOM/INDI software, or mobile apps. In addition, a built-in USB 3.0 hub makes it easier to connect cameras, filter wheels, and other devices directly to the mount. The result is cleaner cable management and a more stable system overall—ideal for permanent installations and remote observatories.

Final Thoughts

If you're serious about astrophotography and demand unmatched precision from your equatorial mount, the iOptron CEM70EC2 delivers. With dual-axis encoders, center-balanced stability, integrated iPolar alignment, and a full suite of connectivity options—including built-in Wi-Fi—this mount is a future-proof investment for imagers who want results, not excuses.

Observing Tip:
While the CEM70EC2 can operate unguided thanks to its high-resolution encoders, you'll still benefit from guiding when imaging at long focal lengths or under poor seeing. Pair it with a high-quality OAG and sensitive guide camera for even tighter stars and frame-to-frame consistency on those all-night imaging runs.
