You've got a 15-pound refractor in a hard case. You open the case, reach in, and realize there's no good way to pick it up. The tube is round and smooth. The focuser is the most fragile thing on the scope. The tube rings are already bolted to the dovetail, and your fingers are trying to find a gap between the ring and the tube that doesn't exist. So you cradle the whole assembly like a sleeping child and hope for the best.

The handle kit solves this in about five minutes. Two M6 screws attach the handle to the top of your tube rings, and you now have a secure, centered grip that lets you lift the scope, carry it to the mount, and set it down into the saddle without a balancing act. It sounds simple because it is. But the first time you mount a 20-lb AT130EDT one-handed while tightening the saddle clamp with the other, you'll understand why this should have been in the box.

The handle is CNC-machined from solid aluminum, anodized matte black, and 232mm long — the right length for tube ring spacings on the AT115EDT, AT130EDT, AT130EDX, and similar refractors. It attaches to any tube rings with M6 threaded holes on top, which covers the full AT refractor line and many other manufacturers' designs.

More Than a Handle

Flip the handle over and you'll find a Vixen-style dovetail rail machined into the top surface, along with several threaded mounting holes. That turns the handle into a mounting platform for a guide scope, red dot finder, Telrad, or piggyback camera. It's real estate that didn't exist before — and it doesn't add a separate accessory rail to your kit list.

The kit also includes a matching 232mm Vixen-style dovetail plate. If your scope shipped with a shorter dovetail bar, the included plate replaces it — giving you the full length you need for proper handle clearance and better balance options. Mounting screws are included.

Features

  • 232mm CNC-machined aluminum handle. Solid aluminum, matte black anodize. Long enough for a secure two-point grip on standard AT refractor tube ring spacings. Strong enough to carry a 25-lb scope one-handed.
  • Matching 232mm Vixen dovetail plate included. Replaces shorter factory dovetail bars. Gives you the full-length plate you need for proper handle fit and better fore-aft balance range.
  • M6 two-screw attachment. One M6 screw on each end secures the handle to your tube rings. Simple, solid, no wobble.
  • Universal fit — any tube rings with M6 threads. Works with all AT refractor tube rings and most third-party rings with M6 threaded holes on the top and bottom. Not limited to AT scopes.
  • Mounting hardware included. Handle, 232mm dovetail plate, and all mounting screws — everything you need to install.

Community Says

Cloudy Nights observers have been putting the handle kit to work:

"I got the handle/dovetail for a similar size refractor and it is perfect. Need that handle for security!"

"Very nice handle, good heft."

"The handle itself has just one screw on each end. The top has slots/grooves for Swiss-Arca and Vixen accessories, as well as several threaded mounting holes."

"I couldn't be happier! The ATH2 kit also included a new 9″ dovetail… at the same price as just the handlebar itself."

Frequently Asked Questions

What scopes does this fit?
Any scope with tube rings that have M6 threaded holes on the top. That includes the AT115EDT, AT130EDT, AT130EDX, AT152EDT, and most other Astro-Tech refractors. It also fits many third-party tube rings with M6 threads — the handle doesn't care what brand of scope is inside the rings. If your ring spacing is close to 232mm, it fits.

Does the kit include a dovetail plate?
Yes — a matching 232mm Vixen-style dovetail plate is included. If your scope shipped with a shorter dovetail bar, the included plate replaces it. This was a specific point of confusion early on — some AT115EDT units shipped with a ~200mm dovetail that was too short for the handle. The kit now includes the full-length plate to match.

Is this just cosmetic, or does it actually matter?
It matters the moment you try to mount a refractor that weighs more than about 10 lbs. Without a handle, you're cradling the tube and hoping the focuser doesn't take the load. With the handle, you lift, carry, and place the scope in one confident motion. It's the difference between a two-person job and a one-person job.

Will this work with non-AT tube rings?
Yes — any tube rings with M6 threaded holes on the top. Most quality tube rings from other manufacturers use M6 threads. Check your rings before ordering — if the holes are there, the handle fits. One reviewer noted that some rings use a different metric thread and required sourcing different bolts, so verify your thread size.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those accessories that doesn't show up on anyone's wish list until they've wrestled a refractor onto a mount in the dark for the third time. Then it's the first thing they order. The handle gives you a secure grip, the dovetail plate solves the short-bar problem, and the Vixen rail on top turns dead space into a mounting platform for your guide scope or finder with the ATHVIX adapter.
