The best telescope is the one you take with you. The Sky Rover 60 GPA exists to end that argument. At under 4.4 pounds fully loaded and barely 12 inches long retracted, this is a 60mm f/6 Super ED doublet apochromat that fits in a carry-on, rides shotgun on a star tracker, and delivers sharp, color-free images that punch well above what you'd expect from a 2.4-inch aperture. It ships with a 2-inch dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser, an integrated camera angle adjuster, and enough optical quality to serve as a serious widefield imaging platform or a grab-and-go visual companion. Small scopes don't have to be compromised scopes.
The optical design is an air-spaced doublet using Super ED glass — Sky Rover's designation for FCD-100 extra-low dispersion material — fully multi-coated on all surfaces. At 360mm focal length and f/6, it's fast enough for short imaging exposures and wide enough to frame large targets like the Orion Nebula complex, the North America Nebula, or entire constellations with a camera attached. The air-spaced configuration gives the designer more room to correct chromatic aberration than a cemented doublet, and the result is color performance that you'd normally associate with a significantly more expensive scope. What makes the 60 GPA more than a toy is the mechanical package. The optional 1× field flattener (sold separately) threads onto the CAA's M48 output and corrects the doublet's native field curvature for flat, sharp stars across the frame. The total backfocus from flattener rear to focal plane is 166.20mm. With a standard DSLR T-ring, the T-ring to focal plane distance is 72mm, and the flattener rear to T-ring distance is 50.80mm.
Spot diagrams from the factory show tight, well-corrected performance on-axis and across APS-C sensors. At full-frame edges (22mm off-axis), the spots grow but remain usable — particularly impressive for a 60mm doublet at f/6. For most astrophotographers, an APS-C sensor is the sweet spot with this scope, delivering a wide field of view with sharp stars corner to corner. Full-frame shooters will see some softening in the extreme corners but can crop slightly or use flat and dark calibration frames to manage it.
The 60 GPA was designed to go where you go. The optical tube is approximately 12 inches long fully retracted with the dew shield pulled back, and extends to about 12 inches with the shield deployed. The entire Orion Nebula region, including the Running Man Nebula to the north, fits in a single shot. Large emission nebulae like the Heart and Soul, the North America and Pelican, and the Rosette Nebula are all frameable. Pair it with a one-shot-color camera or a dedicated astronomy camera and a star tracker, and you have a portable imaging rig that produces genuinely publishable results.
For EAA (electronically assisted astronomy), the 60 GPA on a small tracking mount with a ZWO camera and ASIAir is about as simple as a deep-sky rig gets. At f/6, the depth of focus is shallow — roughly ±0.05mm. That sounds impossibly tight, but the dual-speed focuser handles it. Use the coarse knob to get close, then switch to the fine focus wheel and turn it slowly until stars snap to pinpoints. For imaging, use a Bahtinov mask over the dew shield to nail critical focus — the diffraction spikes will tell you exactly when you've hit it. Is the 60 GPA a good first imaging scope?
It's one of the best. The 360mm focal length is forgiving of tracking errors and mount imperfections — the two biggest sources of frustration for beginning astrophotographers. Can I use this for visual observing too, or is it imaging-only?
It's a genuine dual-purpose scope. Pop in a 2" diagonal and an eyepiece, and you have a sharp, color-free grab-and-go that shows the Moon, planets, double stars, and wide-field deep-sky objects. It won't replace a larger scope for deep-sky detail or high-magnification planetary work, but as a quick-setup visual companion for casual observing or travel, it's excellent. What mount do I need?
For visual use, a sturdy photo tripod with a ball head or fluid head is perfectly adequate. For imaging, a star tracker like the iOptron SkyGuider Pro or Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer handles the 60 GPA easily — the total weight is well under the payload limits of any tracker on the market. For longer focal lengths or autoguided imaging, a small German equatorial mount like the iOptron GEM28 or Sky-Watcher HEQ5 is more than sufficient.
Does the 1× flattener work with full-frame cameras?
The factory spot diagrams show usable performance across a full-frame sensor (22mm off-axis), though the tightest stars will be on APS-C and smaller sensors. If you're shooting full-frame, you'll get excellent results across the central portion of the frame with some softening in the extreme corners. For most full-frame astrophotographers, the performance is acceptable — and at 360mm on a full-frame sensor, the field of view is enormous. DSLR and mirrorless cameras connect via a T-ring for your specific mount (sold separately). Dedicated CMOS and CCD astronomy cameras typically have 48mm T-threads built in and connect directly without a T-ring.
