Lunt 80mm Universal Day & Night Modular Telescope with B1800 Blocking Filter (LS80MT/B1800)
Manufacturer Part # LS80MT/B1800R&P
Manufacturer Part # LS80MT/B1800R&P
The Lunt 80mm Universal Day & Night Telescope with the B1800 blocking filter takes everything that makes the LS80MT an industry leader in solar observing—and enhances it for users who need a wider field of view, higher magnification performance, or camera adaptability.
This version of the LS80MT includes the larger B1800 blocking filter housed in a 2" diagonal, giving you a broader unvignetted image circle. That extra real estate at the focal plane is especially helpful when using longer focal length telescopes, larger sensors, or eyepieces with wide apparent fields. If you're planning to do any imaging or high-power visual work, the B1800 is the way to go.
Why Choose the B1800?
The number in a blocking filter’s name refers to the size of the filter’s internal aperture in millimeters. In this case, the B1800 offers an 18mm clear aperture, while the smaller B1200 provides 12mm. For telescopes with focal lengths around 540mm to 650mm—like the LS80MT—the B1800 gives you better off-axis performance and a wider fully illuminated field. This makes it ideal for solar imaging with larger sensors (like APS-C), binoviewer use, and for critical visual work at high magnifications.
Optical Quality That Performs Day and Night
With its 80mm FPL-53 ED doublet lens and 560mm focal length, the LS80MT delivers crisp, high-contrast views in both solar and nighttime modes. The telescope's f/7 focal ratio is well-balanced for a variety of observing and imaging needs, offering plenty of magnification potential without sacrificing wide-field capability.
Solar Excellence with Pressure Tuning
The internal etalon delivers <0.65 Ångstrom bandpass in hydrogen-alpha, revealing prominences, filaments, and chromospheric detail in vivid contrast. Unlike simpler tilt-tuned designs, the LS80MT uses Lunt’s proprietary pressure tuning system to shift the observed wavelength evenly across the entire image. You can fine-tune your view to highlight specific features on the Sun—something that’s especially valuable during fast-changing solar events.
Important Safety Warning:
Never look at the Sun through this telescope—or any telescope—without the hydrogen-alpha etalon and blocking filter properly installed. Permanent eye damage or blindness will result. The telescope must be used exactly as designed for safe solar observing.
Switch to Night in Minutes
One of the standout features of the LS80MT is its modularity. After your solar session is complete, remove the pressure-tuned etalon and swap in the included focuser back. You now have a premium ED refractor perfect for nighttime stargazing, lunar and planetary observing, or wide-field astrophotography. The same optics that show you sunspots and flares can now help you split double stars and scan the Milky Way.
