It slips into one of the dovetail grooves cut into the TeleVue and Lunt mounting rings. Hex-head bolts hold it securely in place in the dovetail. It is very light in weight, and you can leave it in place permanently without affecting the scope's balance. However, you can remove it quickly if its dovetail groove is needed for another purpose, such as mounting a piggyback camera adapter.

The Sol-Searcher has a respectably-sized circular hole in its front plate that lets an image of the sun fall onto its back plate. To use it, you stand off to one side of the Sol-Searcher with your back to the Sun. While observing the position of the Sun's image on the back plate, you adjust the telescope's position until the Sun's image falls on the circular white panel in the back plate. Once it does, the scope is pointing at the Sun. When you look at the sky through the tilted clear plastic plate at the top of the finder, you see two concentric circles of red light seemingly projected on the sky to help you aim your scope. The outer circle is two degrees in diameter and the inner circle one-half degree in diameter. You can use the outer circle to starhop from object to object in two degree steps. The inner circle will help you center your eyepiece on an object at high powers. Three collimation knobs on the back of the finder let you line up the center circle precisely with the center of the scope's eyepiece field.

The circles stay the same size no matter how far your eye is positioned behind the finder. Unlike ordinary magnifying finders, you don't have to keep your eye pushed up against the QuikFinder to use it. You can be as much as 12" to 18" behind the finder and it will still work properly.

Separate controls on the finder adjust the brightness of the red circles of light and adjust the rate at which the circles pulse on and off. Some observers find it easier to use a pulsing light to avoid tiring out the eye. The Rigel QuikFinder builds this feature in, rather than making it an option as it is with some other finders. The pulsing action also conserves battery life.

The finder uses one user-replaceable 3 volt BR2032 or CR2032 lithium camera battery (supplied, but not guaranteed by Rigel to be fully charged when received). Battery charge and battery life are not covered by the finder warranty. When it is time to replace the battery (readily available at Walmart, Radio Shack, camera stores, etc.), you can use either of the above batteries or a BR2025 or CR2025.

The QuikFinder comes with two bases, each measuring 2" x 2.5". They attach semi-permanently to your telescope optical tube by means of supplied double-faced tape. The tape can be removed from the optical tube, but might mar the finish on a sonotube reflector, so be sure the finder is precisely where you want it to be before taping it in place. One base is shaped to fit scope optical tubes under 5" in diameter, the other fits larger scopes. The finder itself is 5" tall by 1-3/8" square. Its compact size, height, long eye relief, and small base option makes it ideal for small scopes such as the Bushnell 4.5" Voyager and the Meade ETX scopes, where it is difficult to get your head close enough to use a conventional finder. However, the Starbeam has a pivoting light-weight first surface flip mirror that also allows the Starbeam to be used as a straight-through finder, a right angle finder for observing at the zenith, and at any angle in between. This standard flip mirror (also available as an inexpensive retrofit for older Starbeams) makes the Starbeam a truly universal finder.

The Starbeam comes with a machined dovetail base that mounts onto virtually any 8" or larger Celestron or Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope by using the existing finderscope mounting holes on the telescope's rear cell. Because of the wide variety of mounting screws used on different SCT brands and models, no mounting hardware is supplied with the Starbeam. The telescope finder's mounting holes normally are plugged by machine screws that can be removed and used to attach the Starbeam base. The mounting hole spacing also varies, depending on the telescope brand and model. The curved base plate of the dovetail therefore has long slots that allow the Starbeam to be bolted to whatever version of mounting hole spacing might be found on your particular telescope's rear cell.

With a few exceptions (such as the single fork arm Celestron NexStar 8i), there are usually two sets of finder mounting holes on SCT rear cells, at approximately the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions. This allows you to mount the wide field red dot Starbeam in one set of holes while still keeping the scope's narrow field magnifying finder available for use in the other set.

A removable black metal base channel on the Starbeam fits into the dovetail slot machined into the mounting base. The black and silver metal finder itself then slips onto the base and is held in place by one large knurled knob at the side of the base. Azimuth and altitude adjustment knobs allow you to line up the Starbeam with your main scope optics.

An on/off switch and integral rotary brightness control allow you to match the finder brightness to your eye's dark adaptation. In addition, a rotary control in the side of the illuminator lets you gradually vary the blink rate of the illuminator from constantly on, to a rapid blinking, down to a slow half second on/half second off pulsing rate for more comfortable viewing. Uses a Duracell XL DL 1/3N lithium or equivalent battery (supplied, but not guaranteed by TeleVue to be at full strength).

Tech Details:

Weight

14 oz.

Warranty

5 years

This Explore Scientific 8x50mm illuminated right angle erect/right-reading image finderscope with polar alignment reticle has all the features you want and need in a finderscope.

This right-angle illuminated Explore Scientific 8 x 50mm finderscope has an image-erecting amici prism built into its right-angle diagonal that gives you images that are correctly oriented (upright and right-reading), so that star patterns are seen exactly the way you see them on star charts and with your bare eye. Small aperture, dim views, maybe a red-dot that's fine for bright stars but useless for anything faint. The Astro-Tech 8x50 is the straightforward upgrade: 50mm of multi-coated glass that shows you stars you can't see with your naked eye, a real crosshair for precise centering, and an illuminator port for dark-sky sessions. It drops into any standard Vixen finder shoe — the same one that's already on your scope — and immediately becomes the most useful targeting tool on the telescope.

The Optics

Fifty millimeters of multi-coated glass pulls in enough light to show stars well below naked-eye visibility — typically down to about magnitude 9 in a reasonably dark sky. That's the difference between seeing a handful of stars in the finder field and seeing dozens. At 8x magnification with a 5.6-degree true field of view, you get a wide, bright window that makes it easy to orient yourself against a star chart or planetarium app. The multi-coatings keep the image contrasty and reduce scatter, so faint stars stand out against a dark background instead of getting lost in glare.

Crosshair Eyepiece with Dual Focus

The crosshair reticle centers your target precisely — no guessing whether you're in the middle of the field. Don't skip the daytime crosshair step — it's much harder to dial in after dark.

FAQ

What kind of image does this finder show?
This is a straight-through finder with an inverted image — standard for astronomical finders at this price point. The view is upside-down and mirror-reversed compared to the naked eye. This is normal and something you get used to quickly. If you want a correct-image finder with right-angle viewing, the Astro-Tech 10x50 Illuminated RACI Finder is the step up.

Will it fit my telescope?
If your telescope has a standard Vixen-style finder shoe (the two-screw dovetail base), yes. This includes most Astro-Tech, Orion, Celestron, Vixen, and Sky-Watcher telescopes. If you're unsure, check whether your current finder bracket has two parallel rails on its base — that's the Vixen standard.

Do I need the illuminator?
Under light-polluted skies, the black crosshair is usually visible against the sky glow. Under truly dark skies, the crosshair can disappear against a dark background. That's when the Astro-Tech Cordless Illuminator earns its keep — it adds a soft red glow to the crosshair without washing out dim stars. If you observe from dark sites, it's worth adding.

Are the alignment screws plastic?
The three thumb screws are nylon, which is standard at this price point. Nylon screws are gentler on the finder tube and won't scratch the finish. They hold alignment well in normal use. If you're concerned about durability, the screws are a standard thread and could be replaced with metal thumbscrews from a hardware store.

How does this compare to a Telrad or red-dot finder?
Different tools for different jobs. A Telrad or red-dot finder shows you the unaided sky with a projected reticle — great for getting in the right neighborhood. An 8x50 finder magnifies the sky and shows you stars you can't see with your naked eye, so you can star-hop to the exact target. Many experienced observers use both: a Telrad or red-dot to get close, then the 8x50 to nail it down.

Why 8x50 instead of a smaller finder?
The 50mm aperture gathers roughly four times the light of a 25mm finder. That means fainter stars, more reference points for star-hopping, and an easier time navigating to dim targets. At 8x, the magnification is enough to resolve individual stars in crowded fields without being so high that the field of view becomes too narrow to orient yourself.

Optional Accessories

Astro-Tech Cordless Illuminator — lights the crosshair reticle for dark-sky observing. A 6x30 straight-through finder shows you an inverted, mirror-reversed sky through a tube you have to crouch behind — and at 6× with a 30mm objective, the view is dim enough that you're often star-hopping blind. You can see the bright stars. You can't see the faint ones that actually tell you where you are.

The Astro-Tech 10x50 replaces all of that. Fifty millimeters of aperture reaches magnitude 11 — fainter than the stars on any printed star chart. Ten power gives you enough magnification to resolve star patterns that are invisible at 6×. The right-angle amici prism delivers a correct image — upright, right-reading, matching your charts and your naked-eye view exactly. And 20mm of eye relief means you can use it with glasses on without losing the edge of the field.

The practical result: you look at a chart, look through the finder, and the star patterns match. No mental flipping, no mirror reversal, no contortions at the zenith. You star-hop the way star-hopping was meant to work — and you do it while seeing stars three magnitudes fainter than the finder that came with your scope.

Illuminated Reticle Eyepiece

The included eyepiece is a single-crosshair illuminated reticle with a diopter ring for precise crosshair focus. The illuminator has a combined on/off switch and rotary brightness control — dim enough for dark-adapted eyes, bright enough to see against a moonlit sky. That illuminated reticle does double duty: pull the eyepiece from the finder, drop it into your main scope's focuser, and use it for polar alignment, go-to star alignment, or centering guide stars for imaging. One eyepiece, two jobs.

Construction

The finder tube is aluminum, painted in a neutral off-white with black anodized diagonal housing and trim — a color match for the Astro-Tech refractor line. The dew shield is fixed and internally grooved to reduce glare. The image-erecting diagonal attaches via three slotted screws into a dovetail ring and locks with a thumbscrew. Use the zero-power finder to get in the right neighborhood — it matches your naked-eye view one-to-one, so the initial aim is fast. Then switch to the 10x50 RACI to resolve the star patterns and walk to the target. The Telrad gets you close. The 10x50 gets you there. Experienced star-hoppers on Cloudy Nights consistently call this the most effective two-finder setup you can run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my telescope?
The finder bracket has a Vixen-compatible foot that fits any Vixen-standard finder shoe — that covers most Celestron, Orion, Meade, Sky-Watcher, and Astro-Tech scopes made in the last 15 years. An additional mounting shoe is included for other bracket styles. If your scope has a finder shoe, this almost certainly fits it.

Can I really use other eyepieces in the finder?
Yes. The eyepiece holder accepts any standard 1.25" barrel eyepiece with a compression ring. A shorter focal length eyepiece gives you more magnification for confirming faint targets. A longer focal length gives you a wider field. One reviewer reported inserting a 9mm Nagler — the Moon nearly filled the field and the image was sharp. The finder's focal ratio is approximately f/5, so most 1.25" eyepieces perform well in it.

How is alignment maintained?
The dual-ring bracket uses six Teflon-tipped screws — three per ring — for positive adjustment. Unlike spring-tension brackets that can drift or lose grip over time, the screw-only design holds alignment firmly. Several reviewers specifically noted that alignment holds session to session without needing readjustment.

Do the batteries last?
The illuminator uses common A76/LR44/SR44 button batteries, which are inexpensive and available everywhere. Batteries are included, though they may arrive partially depleted from shelf life. Pick up a spare set locally — they cost a couple of dollars and last a long time at typical reticle brightness levels.

Is 26 ounces too heavy for my scope?
It depends on your mount. On a solid equatorial or alt-az mount carrying a refractor or SCT, 26 ounces is not an issue — you may need a slight rebalance. On a lightweight tabletop Dob or a very small scope on a photo tripod, the weight could cause balance problems. If your scope currently carries an 8x50 finder without trouble, the weight difference is modest.

Final Thoughts

The finder that came with your scope was probably a compromise — small, dim, and inconvenient. This one isn't. The 10x50 RACI shows you a correct-image sky down to magnitude 11, the illuminated reticle centers your targets precisely, and the removable 1.25" eyepiece turns a finder into a working instrument. If you star-hop — or if you've been frustrated trying to star-hop with the finder you have — this is the upgrade that makes the difference. It's also the last finder you'll buy.

Tech Details:

<td style="padding: 10px 14px;
