You see up to 40% more detail when you use both eyes to observe, compared with single eye viewing. Your brain interprets the two images to give an illusion of depth, an almost three-dimensional quality to the view, even though the image is not true stereo. In addition, it is simply more comfortable to use two eyes to view, rather than squinting through a single eyepiece.

This straight-through binocular viewer uses paired 1.25" eyepieces (not supplied). It is designed to fit directly into the focuser of reflectors, and into the star diagonal of refractors and catadioptric scopes for more comfortable viewing at the zenith. Because of its long 5.1" internal light path, it includes a 2x image amplifier. This is used as a transfer lens to bring the image back to the eyepieces when used with reflectors and refractors (which usually do not have enough back focus to handle the long light path). This results in a 2x magnification boost, so 32mm eyepieces in the BinoVue have the same magnification as 16mm eyepieces used normally. Keep this 2x magnification in mind when choosing eyepieces to use with the BinoVue. Catadioptric scopes (Schmidt-Cassegrains and Maksutov-Cassegrains) usually have enough available back focus, and the image amplifier should be removed with these scopes. However, the BinoVue, even with the image amplifier removed, still provides about a 25% increase in the effective focal length of a catadioptric scope. Some ghosting may be visible when bright objects are just outside the field in this configuration, but careful eye positioning can minimize this effect.

Eyepieces should be of identical make and focal length for best results. Tightening the knurled rings around the eyepiece holders clamps internal compression rings onto the eyepieces to hold them in place. There is no separate diopter adjustment to match the eyepieces to your individual eyesight, so any eyepiece adjustments need to be made by loosening the compression ring on one eyepiece, sliding the eyepiece in or out until its focus matches that of the other eyepiece, and retightening the compression ring.

The BinoVue has a 1.25" nosepiece. If used in a 2" diagonal with an optional 2" to 1.25" reducer, make sure that the Binovue does not extend far enough into the diagonal to touch the mirror.

The BinoVue is covered by TeleVue's 5-year warranty. However, the warranty does not cover abuse. Rough treatment or dropping the BinoVue may cause its prisms to get out of collimation, giving double images. According to the TeleVue instruction sheet for the BinoVue, "Disturbance of collimation is usually evidence of abuse. It is warranted at the discretion of TeleVue. It consists of five unmounted 50mm diameter filters, one each luminance, red, blue, green, and clear. The STL filter carousel is threaded for 48mm (2") filter cells as well as these 50mm filters, but the full 50mm diameter of these unmounted filters provides the maximum aperture for the large format cameras. For this reason, each is supplied without a threaded cell, which would otherwise reduce the filter's clear aperture. This Custom Scientific 50mm filter set from SBIG is professional quality, antireflection coated, and IR blocked. The luminance filter is both UV and IR blocked to match the RGB cutoffs. Both eyepieces have antireflection coatings on their lens surfaces for sharp images and good contrast. The 4mm eyepiece is realistically beyond the scope's usable magnification limit on all but the very rare nights of absolutely perfect seeing conditions. An optional 9mm eyepiece comes closer to providing the highest useful power on a regular basis.

Barlow lens: A 1.25" 3x Barlow lens is included that triples the magnification of the two supplied eyepieces to 135x and 675x. The 675x magnification of the 4mm eyepiece/Barlow combination is far beyond the scope's usable magnification capability, however. Do not count on using that optical combination very often, if at all. A lower power eyepiece, such as a 40mm (22.5x; 67.5x with the Barlow), would provide a pair of magnifications more useful than the impractical 675x of the 4mm and Barlow combination.

Finderscope: A low power 5x24mm finderscope attaches to the side of the optical tube. The straight-through viewing refractor finderscope provides a traditional inverted mirror-image astronomical view. If properly collimated (aligned) with the view through the main telescope, its crosshairs will help you center distant objects in the telescope so you don't have to search for them using the narrow eyepiece field of view.

This Telescope's Mount . . .

Equatorial mount: The German equatorial mount is designed for astronomical observing. By aligning the mount on the north celestial pole, you only need to turn one slow motion control knob to follow planets and stars as they travel across the sky. A counterweight on the opposite side of the mount from the telescope balances the weight of the optical tube and makes it easy to move the scope effortlessly from one part of the sky to another.

Setting circles: Setting circles (graduated scales marked in either hours and minutes or degrees) are provided in both right ascension (the east/west position of objects in the sky measured in hours and minutes) and declination (the north/south position measured in degrees). These allow you to align the scope on the approximate position of an object in the sky by using its r. a. and dec coordinates from a star chart - before you search for it in the finderscope and eyepiece. Setting circles can reduce the time it takes for you to find the fainter and more difficult deep space objects.

Manual slow motion controls: There are two slow motion control knobs connected to the mount by long flexible cables so they are easy to reach while observing. One controls the scope's motion in right ascension (the east/west direction in the sky). Turning this knob enables you to follow the motion of celestial objects as they travel from east to west across the sky.

The second controls the scope's motion in declination (the north/south direction in the sky). Turning this knob enables you to correct for any north/south drift a celestial object may take as it drifts across the sky, due to an improper alignment of the scope on the north celestial pole when you first set it up.

The two controls combine to give you complete access to any part of the sky. They give you the ability to star hop from a known object to any other object by using a star chart. These filters will also perform well in the standard 1.25" filter wheels of CCD cameras from other manufacturers.

This Meade CCD color filter set includes four high quality 1.25" dichroic CCD color filters. You get separate red, green, and blue interference filters, plus an IR blocking filter. You can use the first three filters for conventional RGB imaging. If you like, you can then add a separate exposure through the IR-blocking luminance filter for more advanced LRGB imaging. You can also use the IR filter by itself for monochrome imaging.

These filters have multiple high transmission ion-deposited coatings on strong 3mm thick optical glass substrates. They are mounted in black anodized filter rings. The filter rings have standard 1.25" diameter eyepiece filter threads so they can thread into any CCD camera's 1.25" nosepiece and can be used with any standard 1.25" color filter wheel. They are parfocal, so you do not have to re-focus when switching between filters. Each filter is packed in its own protective plastic container.

The filters are available separately here so you can buy a Meade Deep Sky Imager Pro or Deep Sky Imager Pro II CCD camera without filters for high-quality monochrome imaging, then add the filters later when you're ready to move up to the more challenging tri-color imaging. Buying the camera and filters separately is more expensive than buying them together as a camera/filter set package, however. For the Meade ETX-90 Maksutov and Meade ETX-60 and ETX-70 refractors, which have a built-in star diagonal and do not have provisions for using an external diagonal such as is used with the SolarMax, Coronado has designed a special blocking filter housing to work in conjunction with these telescopes. The SM60/30 combination, with a 2" straight-through 30mm clear aperture blocking filter, would be a better choice with very long focal length scopes if full disk views are desired.

Some events on the Sun - notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - are extremely fast moving. If such features occur on the disc of the Sun, rather than on the limb, their high velocity towards the observer results in their wavelength being Doppler-shifted to a shorter wavelength than the H-alpha line. If the velocity is high enough, this Doppler-shifted wavelength could be outside the passband of the filter and the feature would not be observable. Coronado includes a T-Max mechanical tuning mechanism with the filter to allow the user to de-tune the SolarMax slightly from the H-alpha line to make such Doppler-shifted phenomena more visible. The T-Max fits between the SolarMax and its adapter plate at the front of the scope, but is not shown in the image. A simple rotary wheel movement accomplishes the tilt necessary to move the passband of the filter. Because of the filter's position at the front end of the telescope, this does not compromise the performance of the filter nor limit the H-alpha field of view as is the case with rear mounted filters.

Tech Details:

Warranty

1 year

Coronado SolarMax 60mm H-Alpha Filter with T-Max & 30mm 2" Blocking Filter | Under 3000mm Focal Length

This product is discontinued and no longer for sale. This is here for informational purposes only.

This 60mm aperture H-alpha filter can be used with virtually any telescope having a 60mm or greater aperture - but is designed to work best with telescopes having a focal length of under 3000mm. The front filter element (containing the ERF and etalon) is threaded to mount directly into the front cell of the TeleVue Pronto refractor, and works particularly well with this scope, but will require an optional custom mounting plate for installation on other telescopes. With catadioptric telescopes, the front filter element must be mounted off-axis to avoid being totally blocked by the telescope's secondary obstruction. This would effectively limit this 60mm filter's use with catadioptric scopes to those with apertures 8" and larger, as an 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain has about a 64mm clear expanse between the secondary obstruction and the edge of the corrector. A 5" catadioptric, on the other hand, has only about a 44mm clear expanse and would partially block the filter. This filter's 60mm aperture and <0.7A bandwidth provide very high resolution and contrast and result in excellent views of fine surface details and prominences when mounted on a good quality telescope. This package is provided with a 2" straight-through 30mm clear aperture blocking filter with a for use with 2" star diagonals and accessories or where full disc viewing is required on telescopes with a focal length under 3000mm.

Some events on the Sun - notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - are extremely fast moving. The modified Petzval design uses a true apochromatic doublet objective lens with an ED element to gather the light. For most telescope manufacturers, this would be enough. But Takahashi goes a step further to perfect your observing and imaging experience. There is a second widely air-spaced ED doublet within the focuser drawtube itself. This second doublet optimizes the optical wavefront from the objective lens to eliminate any residual astigmatism. It also acts as a field flattener for wide field astrophotography. The result is a very wide and flat field with high contrast images that are without any hint of lateral color. It turns your 1.25" or 2" eyepiece telescope into a very high power telephoto lens for digiscoping with those cameras that have non-removable lenses, which normally can't be used for astrophotography. The Celestron adapter allows very high magnification lunar and planetary afocal photography (photography through the telescope eyepiece). The Celestron adapter also works with most straight-through and 45° angled spotting scopes for terrestrial nature photography.

Prefocus your telescope on the Moon or a planet by eye before putting on the Celestron adapter. The adapter has a six-sided jaw that clamps firmly onto your telescope eyepiece. It will fit virtually any 1.25" and 2" eyepiece up to 60mm (2-11/32") in outer diameter. Behind the jaw is a platform to which your camera is bolted using the camera's standard 1/4"-20 thread tripod mounting hole. The platform has two slots for the camera attachment bolt. Use whichever slot comes closest to putting the camera lens directly behind the eyepiece.

The camera platform has micrometer adjustment knobs to adjust it up or down and right or left. All of these adjustments allow you to center your camera lens precisely on the optical axis (center line) of the telescope eyepiece and lock it in place. This assures that your eyepiece image fully covers the camera's imaging chip with no vignetting.

The camera's autofocus mechanism focuses the camera sharply on the high power lunar or planetary image you've already composed and prefocused in the telescope by eye. You can also zoom in and out on the eyepiece image using your camera's zoom controls for a closer or wider angle view. The photographic magnification and field of view will vary, depending on the telescope, eyepiece focal length, the camera used, and the zoom setting of the camera lens. The magnification will be quite high in any case, since you are multiplying the magnification of the spotting scope by the magnification of the camera's zoom.

Once the adapter is centered on your eyepiece, you won't have to readjust it if you take the camera and adapter off your telescope for visual use. Simply loosen the knob that tightens the jaw and slip the entire camera/adapter assembly off the eyepiece. When you're ready to take pictures again, slip the entire assembly back on the eyepiece, tighten the jaw on the eyepiece, and you're once again aligned and ready to shoot.

The Moon generally will more than fill the field of view of the camera. When the camera is set at the extreme wide angle end of its zoom range, there may be some vignetting of the lunar image (the image will be round and framed in black, rather than rectangular). In such cases, zoom out slightly to eliminate the vignetting.

Tech Details:

Weight

14.5 oz.

Warranty

1 year

This product has been discontinued and is no longer availalbe for sale. This is here for informational purposes only.

This TeleVue 1 micron digital indicator kit for Imaging System refractors lets you index exact focus positions with an astonishing 1 micron (1/10,000") accuracy for CCD photography. The readout module sits on a slide that is attached to the top of the focuser body using the supplied hardware. A plunger receptacle is attached to the top of the focuser drawtube. The scope is set at the approximate correct focus and the position of the readout module adjusted by moving the module slide until the tip of the spring-loaded plunger makes contact with the cone-shaped interior of the plunger receptacle. The spring-loading assures a firm and constant contact between the plunger tip and its receptacle. The readout module is zeroed out. Then, as you fine-tune the focuser position in and out over a +/- 0.25" range, the plunger follows the motion of the focuser and the focuser's +/- distance from that zero position shows on the illuminated readout.

The mechanical positions of the readout module/plunger and plunger receptacle are saved after your first imaging session so that you can easily return to the same focuser positions during subsequent sessions.

Tech Details:

Warranty

5 years

This product has been discontinued and is no longer available for sale. This is here for informational purposes only.

This 10' RS-232 serial cable and adapter allows the focuser position readout of a TeleVue digital indicator kit to be displayed on your computer screen using the free TVFocus software available from TeleVue. These virtues make it ideal for serious wide field astronomical viewing. You can sweep the star clouds of Sagittarius, search out the Great Galaxy M31 in Andromeda and the Pinwheel Galaxy M33 in Triangulum, and revel in globular clusters like M13 and M22. The SkyMaster DX uses high light transmission BaK-4 prisms and fully multicoated optics for bright images of faint deep space objects, particularly from a truly dark sky observing site. While it offers quite nice astronomical viewing on its own, it also makes a good wide-field observing complement to the narrower field of a telescope.

The optical performance is surprisingly good, particularly in view of its large aperture and very sensible price. The optics are fully multicoated on all air-to-glass surfaces for high light transmission. The field of view is respectably flat. Astigmatism, distortion, and chromatic aberration at the edges of the field are well controlled. This makes for clean and expansive views of open clusters like the Beehive and the Wild Duck, with point-like stars to the edges of the field, as well as fascinating sights like the Double Cluster in Perseus.

At 38 ounces, the SkyMaster DX is rather heavy. We recommend using it on a camera tripod for the sharpest images, as few people will have the wrist strength needed to hold it steady for extended hand-held use. A 1/4"-20 thread mounting hole for an optional photo tripod adapter (#1185) is built into the SkyMaster's center hinge, hidden under the removable Celestron logo.

The body is armored in black rubber for a comfortable grip and added protection against unexpected bumps and thumps. Because it is O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged to be waterproof and internally fogproof, there's no need to worry about putting the binocular down in dew-soaked grass or letting dew bead up on it during an evening's observing session. The large ribbed rubber focusing wheel is easy to adjust, even when wearing gloves. P>Eye relief is specified at a very long 18mm. That said, its very bright images and good resolution will do a creditable job of revealing small details from what would normally be considered an excessively distant vantage point. It is a good choice for long distance terrestrial viewing under low light conditions. The 8 x 56mm is excellent for revealing underwing field markings of raptors in flight, for observing deer feeding in distant meadows early in the morning, or any other twilight birding or nature study activity where close focus is not required - but bright images are essential. While this may be acceptable at f/7 or longer focal ratios, at shorter focal ratios the vignetting becomes obtrusive. For this reason, this new SBIG #CFW83NF 5-position filter wheel mounts on the front of the ST-8300 and holds optional larger diameter 36mm unmounted filters for use with fast focal ratio reflectors and refractors.

Full sets of 36mm LRGB and narrowband filters from Astrodon and Baader Planetarium are now available and a new set from Custom Scientific will be available in the near future. In addition, Astronomik intends to make filters in the 36mm size, so there is a wide variety of filters available. This #CFW83NF filter wheel is also available with a complete 4-filter set of 36mm Baader LRGB filters (#CFW83) at a savings of $95 over the cost of buying this empty filter wheel and the Baader filters separately.

The #CFW83NF filter wheel is a single carousel design with a new filter retaining system that makes changing filters easier than using individual retaining screws for each filter. The entire carousel is also interchangeable for swapping between a standard LRGB set and a narrowband filter set all at the same time without having to mount and dismount individual filters.

This filter wheel has a small footprint, only 4 x 5 inches. Its thin design adds only 20mm of backfocus, so that the total backfocus for an ST-8300 with this filter wheel is only 38mm. The #CFW83NF plugs directly into the I2C port on the ST-8300 camera and does not require separate power or control cables. Fully automatic functioning of the filter wheel is controlled by the same software that controls the camera. An optional Nikon lens adapter (#CFW83NIK) is available that connects to the filter wheel to let you use Nikon 35mm and DSLR lenses for extremely wide field imaging.

In addition, for those who may already have 2" filters, SBIG has designed an optional adapter plate to mate the ST-8300 camera to the SBIG #FW8-STL 8-position 2" filter wheel. The FW8-STL holds both 2" filters in threaded cells and 50.8mm round unmounted filters.

Finally, for those users with slower focal ratio optical systems, standard 1.25" filters may be acceptable. In this case both the CFW9 and CFW10 filter wheels will fit the ST-8300 camera and these too will operate automatically by plugging into the I2C port on the ST-8300 camera.

The images show the #CFW83NF mounted on an ST-8300.

Tech Details:

Weight

1 lb. 6 oz.

Warranty

1 year

This Product Has Been Discontinued And This Is Here for Informational Purposes Only. It comes complete with everything you need to work right out of the box!

The Celestron NexGuide uses a Sony ICX404AL CCD sensor to detect and lock on a guide star to guide your mount while your camera takes deep space images. The Sony sensor has 9.6 x 7.5 micron pixels in a 510 by 492 array, with exposure times that double each time in 13 steps from 1 millisecond to 4096 milliseconds for highly accurate guiding.

The battery-powered sensor is mounted in a sleek housing that measures just 4.25" x 3.25" x 1.25" in diameter by 2.35" long. It weighs just 7 oz. The separate battery pack uses four D-cells (not supplied) that will provide many, many hours of guiding in the field. You can also use your own DC power supply capable of providing 6V to 14V DC (lower voltage is recommended) at 250mA and up. Your power supply will need a 2.1mm power plug, center positive, to connect to the NexGuide.

The sensor housing also holds a 1" x 1.5" night vision LCD display. The left half of the screen displays text information such as the menu, data, and status of the autoguider. The right half of the screen displays the image captured by the guiding sensor. A separate nine-button hand control measuring 3.75" x 2.5" x 0.6" lets you navigate the on-screen menus and control all the functions of the NexGuide. The hand control weighs only 3 ounces, including cable. The buttons are illuminated.

The NexGuide has a 1.25" nosepiece for connection to your photoguide scope focuser. The nosepiece comes with an extension for those scopes with more back focus and can be removed to reveal a female T-thread interface. A parfocalizing ring is provided to use with any convenient eyepiece to aid in focusing your photoguide scope.

The Celestron NexGuide's ease of use will appeal to beginning and experienced astrophotographers alike. The built-in software requires no previous knowledge of autoguiding. It offers automatic calibration of each axis in addition to automatically setting the guide rate parameters. The exposure range is from 1 millisecond to 4 seconds, assuring the ability to use even a faint star for guiding purposes. Typically, the NexGuide can capture and guide on a star as faint as magnitude 8 using an 80mm refractor guidescope, 2048ms exposure times, and good seeing conditions.

The NexGuide is complete with guiding sensor and LCD screen unit; 1.25" barrel to T-thread adapter; 1.25" barrel extension; 1.25" parfocalizing ring; hand control and cable; 6' RJ-12 guiding cable to connect the NexGuide to your mount via an ST4 compatible output jack on the NexGuide body; battery case and cable; instructions; and a separate serial cable and RJ-45 programming plug for downloading possible firmware updates from the Celestron website.

With the Celestron NexGuide stand-alone autoguider, precision automatic autoguiding for long-exposure deep-sky photography is now easier and more economical than ever before.

This product has been discontinued and is here for informational purposes only.

The Celestron CGEM DX 1100HD - a double Sky & Telescope Hot Product - combines big 11" EdgeHD high definition optics with a Celestron CGEM DX go-to mount to give you a superlative and surprisingly portable true astrographic-quality telescope.

This product is discontinued. This is here for informational purposes only.

This Celestron CGEM DX 1100HD telescope has:

• 11" EdgeHD high definition aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain optics
• newly-upgraded 50 pound payload capacity CGEM DX German equatorial mount
• StarBright XLT optical multicoatings for the highest possible light transmission
• 9 x 50mm finderscope
• 23mm 2" 82° field Axiom ultra-premium eyepiece (122x)
• NexStar go-to computer hand control with 40,000+ object database
• NexRemote software to control the telescope via computer
• 2-year warranty

The Celestron CGEM DX 1100HD telescope puts unique new large aperture 11" aplanatic (free from coma and corrected for spherical aberration) EdgeHD high definition Schmidt optics on a newly-upgraded high-precision Celestron CGEM DX go-to German equatorial mount. The 17 amp hour capacity Celestron Power Tank #4517V is recommended and will operate the scope all night long without danger of running out of power. A 5 amp capacity AC adapter (#2338PRO) is also available for continuous operation from a household AC outlet, in an observatory dome, for example.

Polar alignment: To make a casual polar alignment for visual use quick and easy, there's a latitude scale with large ergonomically-friendly altitude and azimuth adjustment knobs. No polar alignment finderscope is available to aid in the precise polar alignment required for long exposure astrophotography, nor is any needed. A unique Celestron All-Star Polar Alignment program built into the NexStar hand control helps you do a very precise computerized polar alignment in mere minutes, using any bright star, even when Polaris is hidden by trees or buildings. The program works in both northern and southern hemispheres.

Adjustable height tripod: The heavy and stable 45 pound tripod (the same one used on Celestron's top-of-the-line CGE PRO mount) has 2.75" diameter stainless steel legs with a metal center leg brace for rigidity, for excellent vibration damping characteristics. The center leg brace is drilled to form a convenient accessory tray that holds 1.25" and 2" eyepiece to keep them up out of the dew-soaked grass.

Mounting the scope: A Losmandy-style "D-plate" dovetail slot on the top of the mount holds the long dovetail slide bar mounted under the optical tube. This allows you to slide the optical tube fore and aft in the dovetail slot to quickly and precisely balance the optical tube in declination when you add or subtract accessories, eliminating the need for an extra counterweight to balance a camera or other accessories. Setup and takedown times are exceptionally fast, as a single large hand-tighten knob holds the optical tube in place. A second lock knob prevents the tube from sliding off the mount should the hand-tighten knob loosen. The oversized dovetail mounting platform assures secure vibration-free tube attachment.

Balancing the scope: The single sliding 22 pound counterweight is locked in place on the new larger diameter counterweight shaft with a single large hand-tighten knob. This makes it easy to rebalance the scope in right ascension if you add heavy photographic accessories.

Here's a link for more details for the CGEM DX mount.

NexStar computer hand control: The supplied NexStar computer hand control has a built-in database of more than 40,000 stars and objects that it can find and track for you. These include the complete RNGC, Messier, Caldwell, IC, and Abell catalogs; selected SAO stars; the planets, the Moon, and others. The custom database lists of all the most famous deep-sky objects by name and catalog number; the most beautiful double, triple and quadruple stars; variable stars; non-planetary solar systems objects; and asterisms.

The NexStar display: All of the database and scope operation information is displayed on a double line, 16-character, liquid crystal display on the hand control. There are 19 fiber optic backlit LED buttons to make it easy for you to control the computer without affecting your dark-adapted vision. The NexStar hand control provides a constant and easily-visible illuminated right ascension and declination readout of the scopes position on the sky. This provides much greater accuracy than conventional (and hard to see at night) manual setting circles for star-hopping or locating objects by their celestial coordinates alone, should you want to observe the old-fashioned way without using the computer to find objects for you.

Some NexStar features: The software built into the NexStar hand control includes many, many features and programs discussed at greater length by clicking on the "NexStar CGEM" icon above. An RS-232 communication port on the hand control allows you to operate the telescope via a personal computer using the supplied RS-232 cable and NexRemote software CD-ROM. The hand control and motor control software is flash-upgradeable to allow you to download the latest product updates over the Internet to keep your CGEM mount always at the cutting edge of technology. An autoguider port is located on the electronic pier for guided, but unattended, long exposure astrophotography.

Aligning on the sky: Five different alignment methods are built into the NexStar computer - 2-star align, quick align, 1-star align, last alignment, and solar align - allowing you to choose a level of computer accuracy in automatically finding objects with which you are comfortable. Alignment is easily accomplished in only a few short minutes. You can be observing in less than 15 minutes after you first take the scope outdoors. There's even a new and unique "All-Star" software-assisted alignment of the mount's polar axis using a single bright star that will have you ready for imaging before it's even dark enough to see the North Star. For more details, click on the "NexStar CGEM computer" icon above.

Two-year warranty: All Celestron go-to telescopes have a two-year warranty, double that of competitive go-to scopes.
