Not everyone needs a German equatorial mount. For visual astronomers, solar observers, outreach presenters, and casual planetary imagers, a good alt-azimuth GoTo mount offers a faster, simpler, and more intuitive setup. The iOptron AZ Mount Pro is one of the few alt-az mounts on the market that delivers true “set it and forget it” performance—with enough precision and payload capacity to handle everything from compact APOs to 9.25" SCTs.
This version includes the 1.75" LiteRoc tripod for a rock-solid and lightweight observing platform, and comes ready to go with an onboard battery, counterweight, hand controller, and built-in WiFi.
iOptron calls it “level and go,” and it’s exactly as easy as it sounds. With a built-in precision bubble level, simply adjust the tripod and mount until level, turn on the power, and let the mount do the rest. Thanks to a 32-channel GPS receiver, position and angular detection sensors, and zero-backlash stepper motors, the AZ Mount Pro knows where it is and what the sky looks like—no manual input or phone connection required.
Upon startup, the mount automatically slews to a bright star. You simply confirm it’s centered, and the system is aligned. No apps. No star charts. No fuss.
Despite its capabilities, the AZ Mount Pro head weighs only 13 pounds (excluding counterweight and tripod), making it easy to transport and quick to set up in the field. It runs whisper-quiet on low-power stepper motors, and its retractable counterweight shaft makes it even more compact when stored in the included aluminum case.
Its 33 lb primary payload capacity is enough to handle a wide range of telescopes, including SCTs up to 9.25", refractors up to 5", and Newtonians up to 6" depending on tube length. Want to run a second OTA or DSLR camera simultaneously? Add the optional #8953 Vixen-style secondary saddle and you can mount a second instrument up to 10 pounds on the opposite side.

The AZ Mount Pro is an excellent choice for public outreach events or solar observing sessions. You don’t need to worry about meridian flips or polar alignment, and its quiet operation means you won’t disturb conversations or nearby observers. For solar use, just add a safe full-aperture solar filter and use the hand controller’s solar tracking mode for hours of hands-free Sun watching.
The iOptron AZ Mount Pro with LiteRoc tripod is a rare find—a portable alt-azimuth GoTo mount that’s both sophisticated and simple to use. Whether you’re running a visual setup, doing sidewalk astronomy, or carrying multiple scopes, it combines high-end engineering with intuitive design. For observers who want less time fiddling and more time observing, this might just be the smartest mount in the field.
