This Vixen tabletop tripod allows the SXW Sphinx and SX Sphinx Lite mounts to be used on any solid flat surface for casual astronomy. A patio table or picnic table in the back yard can be turned into an observatory simply by adding this fold-up aluminum tripod to a Sphinx go-to mount. This tabletop tripod works best with physically short (f/5) 80mm refractors and small catadioptric scopes weighing under 5 lbs (such as Maksutov-Cassegrain spotting scopes), as it will keep their eyepiece in a comfortable observing position.
Physically long refractor optical tubes will probably hit the tabletop when the scope is pointed at the zenith when on this tabletop tripod, and would certainly put the eyepiece location uncomfortably close to the top of the table. An optional half pillar #HP3584 might be needed to add enough extra height to the mount to bring the eyepiece of a medium focal length refractor up to a comfortable observing height. An optional full-length field tripod #SX2513 would probably be a more suitable choice for use with physically long scopes, when away from the back yard, or whenever a suitable flat surface is not available.
