| This Questar Carpod lets you mount a standard fork-mounted 3.5" Questar on your car window so you can observe birds, wildlife, and a considerable chunk of the skies from inside your car. It makes for warmer astronomical observing and birding in the winter, lets your car act as a blind for close-up birding and nature studies, and saves you the expense of buying a $3000+ Field Model Questar for watching wildlife if you already have a standard Questar.
The Carpod is over-engineered in traditional Questar fashion. It is basically a rectangular anodized aluminum alloy plate measuring 8" x 10" x 0.25". At one end of the plate there is an adjustable length prop that seats on the armrest below the car’s door sill. The other end of the plate has a vinyl covered lip at right angles to the plate that hooks over the sill. The vinyl covering protects your car’s finish from getting scratched.
When properly adjusted, the Carpod sits solidly on your car door to allow observation or photography. Of course, when moving the vehicle over rough terrain, you should lift the Carpod off the door and put it on the seat, as it does not clamp in place.
The 5 pound Carpod has a 1/4"-20 thread screw with a hand-tighten knob that fits through any of three holes in the aluminum plate. This threads into the base of a fork-mounted Questar to hold the scope securely to the Carpod. You can also use the screw to attach a sturdy flat-bottomed pan head to the plate to hold and orient a Field Model or other long lens.
